Susan Fincham Young Carers’ Scholarship

In 2013, SBS’s Insight profiled young carers – or, in their words, “some awesome kids doing some pretty grown-up stuff”. After watching this special feature, Susan Fincham felt compelled to support young carers and kindly reached out to Melbourne High School to see how she could help.

She established a bursary to provide recognition and support to young carers at Melbourne High School, a school very close to her heart.

The bursary aims to provide young carers with the opportunity to increase participation in the MHS community while alleviating some of the financial pressures associated with caring. Two bursaries are provided annually and are used to cover expenses such as fees, uniforms, books, excursions and co-curricular activities.

If you’re under 25, and looking after someone in your family, you belong to a group of people called young carers.

Do you spend time doing any of these things for someone in your family:

  • taking them to medical appointments, or the hospital?
  • helping them to take their medication?
  • helping them to wash themselves, or with personal care?
  • doing the shopping or cooking?

The person you help might be:

  • your parent
  • your brother or sister
  • your grandparent
  • any other family member.

Applications for the 2018 bursary are now open. Students who believe they meet the application criteria are encouraged to apply.

Closing date for applications is 9 March 2018.
